The final five really had to shine tonight.
As we whittle down the number of Project Runway All Stars, we learn that tonight's challenge is to incorporate lighting technology into their avant-garde pieces, which will create a vision on the runway under black light and wow guest judge Pharrell, who will use the winning ensemble for one of his artists.
Turn down the lights and let's get started...
Everyone was intrigued yet nervous about this new experiment.
While Austin Scarlett had visions of lights on a "cloud of tulle," Michael Costello kept going back and forth between sketched designs to see what spoke to him. Well, that and he kept going into the "dark room" they had created in the work space to test out their neon tapes and fabrics under black light.
This whole episode was really a raver's dream.
After meeting with Marie Claire's editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, it was evident that each look could either be "fabulous or fugly."
Before heading to the runway, we learned through a Skype session between Austin and his mother, Debra, that her home went into foreclosure.
"It horrifies me that my mother is basically homeless."
At this point, the finishing touches have been applied, the models have gotten their glow-in-the dark hair and makeup done, so it was time to see the final products.
After viewing the pieces, Pharrell chose Austin's "mysterious" and whimsical look as the winner, and told Scarlett that he was a "star," which made the designer cry. Awww!
Unfortunately, the judges weren't too enthralled by Costello's "poorly executed, Comic-Con" inspired piece or Jerell Scott's "grandma" outfit, but it was Jerell that got the boot.
