Just when the singer's Digital Death campaign appeared, well, ailing, the goal to raise $1 million for World AIDS Day has been reached. The original scheme had been for celebs to refrain from social networking until fans and Twitter followers had raised the money themselves.
But it appears that one really big fan made all the difference.
Keys and Keep a Child Alive cofounder Leigh Blake announced Monday that, with help from the public and the celebs who participated in the campaign, they pulled in $500,000, after which pharma billionaire Stewart Rahr agreed to match the amount.
"From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of the fans, friends and artists who stood together for this cause and saved real lives," said Keys. "I am humbled by the outpour of support from everyone."
An outpour that probably could have been more humbling.
Keys, hubby Swizz Beatz, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and a host of other celebs took a pledge to stay off Twitter, Facebook, et al. starting Dec. 1 until $1 million had been raised via text message for Keys' charity, which goes to help those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.
E! News learned last week would-be donors were proving reluctant to provide enough cash to resurrect their favorite stars, contributing only $183,966 by Dec. 3.
But however it happened, the celebs ultimately raised $1 million for a great cause, so congrats to Keys & Co. for making it happen.
"I am back from the dead! Thank you all so much for your donations and contributions! I have missed u all so much!!!" Kim K. tweeted today. "We raised $1mil to help KCA fight AIDS. Thank you so much and never stop buying life!"
