Leo on the Prowl to Save Tigers

Leonardo DiCaprio teams with World Wildlife Fund for Save the Tigers campaign to raise awareness for brink-of-extinction species

Leave it to a guy named Leo to save the tigers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is doing his part to restore the good name (and population) of tigers, teaming up with the World Wildlife Fund to kick off Save Tigers Now, an awareness campaign to save the brink-of-extinction felines.

"Tigers are endangered and critical to some of the world's most important ecosystems," DiCaprio said. "Key conservation efforts can save the tiger species from extinction, protect some of the planet's last wild habitats and help sustain the local communities surrounding them.

"By protecting this iconic species, we can save so much more."

DiCaprio is currently in Asia as part of the campaign, where he's learning firsthand about the species' devastation (like there's less than 3,200 left in the wild) and document his journey.

He'll also participate in anti-poaching patrols on his trek and meet with guards tasked with protecting the animals from international traffickers.

Taking advantage of the nifty tie-in that this also happens to be the Year of the Tiger on the Chinese calendar, DiCaprio and the WWF have set a goal for themselves of raising $20 million and doubling the species' population by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger.
