Billy Joel is in a sober state of mind.

The "Big Shot" singer wrapped his most recent stint in rehab, checking out of the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California, over the weekend, his publicist, Claire Mercuri, confirmed Tuesday.

Joel, 55, completed a 30-day treatment program for alcohol abuse. He checked out on Sunday, movin' out of the facility at 6:30 a.m. to give waiting paparazzi the slip.

The Piano Man entered the clinic last month to kick what the New York Daily News reported was a weakness for wine.

The newspaper quotes an unnamed Joel associate as saying the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer "looks really fit. He's dedicated to a healthy and sober lifestyle," adding that he's "completely sworn off all alcohol."

Joel's third wife, Kate Lee, a 23-year-old correspondent for PBS, reportedly flew from the couple's New York home base to California to meet the singer and escort him back to their Long Island digs. (The couple married last October.)

No word on Joel's immediate plans beyond some last-minute tinkering with a career-spanning box set due out on Columbia Records this fall. It's not known whether Joel will launch a tour in support of the collection, which contains his greatest hits and some previously unreleased material.

Before checking into rehab last month, the five-time Grammy winner spent several days in a New York hospital for severe stomach pains. His rep denied reports Joel was suffering from pancreatitis, which is typically brought on by heavy alcohol consumption.

This was Joel's second stint in rehab in the past three years. In June 2002, the entertainer checked into the Silver Hill rehab facility in Connecticut to deal with "an undisclosed personal problem" just days after crashing his Mercedes on Long Island and escaping with only minor injuries. He later confessed that a "prolonged period of indulgence" persuaded him it was time to get his act together.
