Stephen Colbert is getting his rock band on.
Capping his weeklong music celebration ridiculously dubbed StePhest Colbchella '011, the fake newsman announced he's signing with former White Stripes mastermind Jack White's label, Third Man Records.
And Colbert Nation, there's something else to croon about...
In honor of the occasion, your favorite pundit performed his debut single for the imprint, "Charlene II (I'm Over You)," on Thursday night's The Colbert Report with a little help from labelmates The Black Belles.
So how's it sound? You be the judge.
Before he became the pompous blowhard he is today, Colbert claims to have once had a band in the '80s, Stephen and the Colberts, which performed love songs and power ballads. One of those was the Pet Shop Boys-inspired "Charlene (I'm Right Behind You)."
"Charlene II (I'm Over You)" is said to be the sequel to his earlier purported hit, which Colbert performed on his show on Valentine's Day in 2006.
Last night's unveiling of the follow-up was the final segment in a three-part series dubbed "2001 and 1: A Rock Odyssey Featuring Jack White" on the Report, which saw the rocker appear as Stephen's guest the last few nights. Little did we know upon introducing Colbert, White would be his boss!
The music-themed Colbert-a-thon didn't stop in the studio, however. Colbert, White and the Black Belles set out for Manhattan's High Line Park to plug the new tune as part of a Third Man Rolling Record Store release party this morning. There, the crew signed and sold limited-edition copies of the single, including a vinyl version, and performed it live.
No doubt, they'll get a Colbert bump on the charts.
