Jessica Simpson's taken heat for her singing, her chatty exes and her intelligence, but no one can knock her when it comes to raking in the dough on her line of shoes, handbags clothing and perfume.

The singer has made a killing (reportedly to the tune of $1billion dollars), and now she's set to teach others her secret as she signs on to play a fashion mentor on a new NBC reality show where an unknown designer will get funding to start their own brand.

So what will Simpson be doing?

She act as a guide on the new reality series, Fashion Star. The series will follow 14 unknown fashion-savvy contestants as they compete in weekly challenges to win a multimillion-dollar contract to launch their own brand in three of America's largest retailers.

"Jessica Simpson has built an incredible fashion business and is a perfect mentor to our aspiring designers," said Ben Silverman, whose company Electus will produce the show along with The Magical Elves and 5X5 Media.

Model Elle McPherson will host the show, which the network is calling a "true spectacle" that will be taped in front of a studio audience and feature dancers, live music and models along with a full fashion show every week. The series will also allow viewers at home to buy the winning designs each week after they air.

Simpson has turned her singing career into something of a fashion empire, with a line that includes nearly two-dozen products, including sportswear, denim, watches and fragrances.

And while lots of stars pump out perfumes and whatnot, Simpson has been super successful because of her "girl next door" qualities, says Vince Camuto, who licenses her products.

Who knew the girl next door was so rich?
