Amy Locane would probably prefer the melodrama of Melrose Place right about now.

The former prime-time soap hottie has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of aggravated manslaughter and assault by automobile for a June crash that killed a fellow motorist in Montgomery, N.J.

"I believe that the aggravated manslaughter charges are totally inappropriate and misplaced," Locane's lawyer, Blair Zwillman, tells E! News. "I believe that when all of the facts of the incident become known, Amy Locane will be acquitted. She has confidence in the criminal justice system. She is distraught about the death of Helene Seeman. Amy has two young daughters who mean everything to her."

According to the original criminal complaint, Locane admitted to police that she had been drinking wine before getting behind the wheel.

At around 9 p.m. on June 27, her 2007 Chevy Tahoe hit the passenger side of Fred Seeman's 2010 Mercury Milan as he was turning into a driveway. Helene, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was killed at the scene, according to poilce.

Authorities also said that the fatal crash was Locane's second accident of the night. She was already suspected of rear-ending another vehicle several miles away and fleeing the site before the other driver could call police.

Locane is facing up to five years on the assault charge and between 10 and 30 years for manslaughter, if convicted.

Zwillman says that the statuatory maximum would be 35 years if convicted on both charges, with the actress not being eligible for parole until she had served 85 percent of her sentence.

Locane lives in Hopewell, N.J., just west of Princeton, with hubby Mark Bovenizer and their two daughters.
