First, the good news: Adam Duritz is once again free to inexplicably attract Hollywood hotties out of his league! (Why should John Mayer have a lock on that market?)

Now, the bad news: it's because he and Emmy Rossum have called it quits. But in the great Hollywood tradition, they've done so amicably.

So what happened?

Yeah, right. Like the woman who somehow managed to keep a marriage a secret is suddenly going to open up to the press. But Rossum did confirm that she and Duritz split some two months ago.

"We're still very close friends," she told USA Today, refusing to elaborate or note who initiated calling time on the relationship.

The odd couple first got tongues wagging last fall, just months after the 24-year-old divorced her secret hubby Justin Siegel. Their biggest splash was made in October of that year, when they turned up arm-in-arm at the American Ballet Theater gala and Emmy described her attraction to the lady collector.

"I get why chicks dig him," she said at the time. "He's extremely kind, incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, creative and respectful."

And now back on the market. Come on, ladies, if he's good enough for Rossum, Jennifer Aniston, Mandy Moore, Courteney Cox and Michelle Branch, he's good enough for you. Just try and form an orderly line.
