This is a lousy day for Swell Season.

A 32-year-old man apparently committed suicide last night at the alt-folk group's concert at a winery in Saratoga, Calif., by jumping onto the stage while they were performing.

Ironically, Oscar-winning singer-songwriters Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova had just finished the rousing "When Your Mind's Made Up" when Michael Edward Pickels hit the stage, according to eyewitness reports.

"The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the death that occurred at last night's show," Swell Season said in a statement Friday. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased, his family and friends."

A witness told the San Francisco Chronicle that the band members were bantering onstage when, all of a sudden, there was a crash near where Hansard was standing.

The Irish singer, who also fronts the Frames, was reportedly the first person to approach the body.

A doctor attempted unsuccessfully to revive Pickels, who, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, left his seat at around 10 p.m. and moments later jumped roughly 30 feet from somewhere above the stage.

Swell Season immediately canceled the remainder of the show. They're scheduled to play in Portland, Ore., tonight.

Concert promoter Live Nation said today that its upcoming itinerary remains intact.

"We have ample security in place and trained safety staff at every concert and we are committed to ensuring the safety of all who come to Mountain Winery," the company said in a statement. "At the same time, we are working with the local authorities in investigating this tragic incident."

Hansard and Irglova shared the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2008 for "Falling Slowly" from the Irish film Once, which they also starred in.
