Jessica Simpson Still Enjoys Tony Romo's "Cute Butt" and John Mayer's...Music

Scorned songstress talks love and disappointment on Late Show

Too bad for John Mayer that he doesn't wear a uniform that includes a muzzle.

While Tony Romo remains a "great, dear friend" of Jessica Simpson, who still likes to admire the Dallas Cowboy's "cute butt" in his football togs, the scorned songstress seems to have turned the corner on Mayer, whom she only called a "great person" while taping tonight's episode of Late Show With David Letterman.

After throwing a few compliments Romo's way ("He's a fine breed," Simpson agreed when Letterman compared pro athletes to thoroughbreds), the always-ready-to-go-there host steered the conversation to Mayer.

"Heh, heh, heh, heh-heh-heh," Simpson, raising her eyebrows, laughed in a "yes, let's talk about that!" way.

Simpson more or less ran with what she told Oprah Winfrey last week in response to questions about Mayer's "sexual napalm" bomb in Playboy.

"Now why doesn't the guy know better than to say things like that?" Letterman inquired.

Shaking her head in agreement, Simpson coyly responded, "Like what? I don't know what you're talking about."

"Normally you would think that somebody you care about would keep those intimate details to himself," she continued. "I mean, it was definitely a compliment—in a way—but I don't really want people to know that about me. I'm like the good girl, and then that happens."

When Letterman pointed out—and this is where it could have become really uncomfortable—that she could be both, she replied, ""See, that's the thing. I am. But he gave away my game!"

"He never really complained, but I didn't know it would be in Playboy," Simpson said, adding that she has not talked to Mayer since the issue hit the stands.

"I will always care about him," she said. "I think he's a great person, a great musician. But I was very disappointed by the article."

As for Romo, she'll always "adore" him. "He's going to be one of my friends for life, sure."

"And where do I fit in in all this?" Letterman wondered.
