Action-war drama named Best Picture by Producers Guild, making Oscar race really, really interesting

Now this is getting interesting.

One week after Avatar took top honors at the Golden Globes and one night after Inglourious Basterds took top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, The Hurt Locker blew up at the Producers Guild of America Awards.

And like any good triangle, this one involves exes.

The Hurt Locker, honored tonight with the PGAs' equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar, was directed and produced by Kathryn Bigelow, who, as you'll recall from your googling, used to be married to James Cameron, whose box office behemoth Avatar was one of the defeated nominees.

In total, the Iraq War-set Hurt Locker beat back 10 films, including the usual suspects Inglourious Basterds, Precious, Up, Up in the Air, An Education and Invictus, and the unusually respected sci-fi films District 9 and Star Trek

The Hurt Locker's win gives it a slight, but only slight, statisical advantage heading into the Feb. 2 Oscar nominations and beyond. In the last nine years, the top PGA film winner has gone on to claim the Best Picture Oscar five times. Or, to put it in a way that'll give hope to Avatar and Inglourious Basterds: In the last nine years, the PGA winner has gone on to lose the Best Picture Oscar almost half the time.

Like we said, interesting.

Here's a rundown of the top winners at the 21st Annual PGA Awards:
