Was Kate Gosselin fired from a job she never really had?

A recent report claimed that reality television's most famous mother of eight was given the boot from a still-in-development View-esque talk show fronted by Food Network cooking queen Paula Deen because she's "too controversial."

A source now tells me that Gosselin was never considered a serious contender to permanently join the chatfest panel consisting of Deen, former Early Show cohost Rene Syler, Lee Woodruff and comedian Judy Gold

"She was never contracted to be on the panel," the source says. "She was just meant to be a guest."

Perhaps her personality wasn't big enough for the table, too.

When the women joined forces in September in New York City to shoot the project, a source on the set told us that Gosselin was "very shy" and "quiet."

Not exactly a recipe for a successful talk show, is it?

Radaronline.com also reported that Deen worried about Gosselin getting too much attention for her participation. About 20 women are said to have auditioned for a spot on the show.

A rep for Telepictures, the media heavyweight behind the show, declined to comment.
