Group's manager avoids charges after offering tepid mea culpa to hated gossip hound

The road manager for the Black Eyed Peas, Liborio "Polo" Molina, offered up a half-hearted apology today for punching Perez Hilton outside a Toronto nightclub back in June. But lest you think there was some kind of kumbaya moment, Molina quickly added that the Boom Boom Pow could've been avoided if the overwrought celebrity blogger hadn't instigated him by calling Will.i.am a "f----t."

"I apologize for what I did on June 22, 2009, even though you engaged in highly offensive comments, including a homophobic slur to my clients. I acknowledge that these kinds of issues should not be resolved through a physical response," wrote Molina in a brief letter read this morning by his lawyer, Mark Sandler, outside a Canadian courthouse.

In exchange for Molina's mea culpa, Hilton agreed to withdraw the assault charges. However, a judge imposed several other minor conditions on Molina, which will remain in place for the next year.

The 36-year-old California native is barred from "directly or indirectly" communicating with the gossipmonger, must stay clear of the King West nightclub (the scene of the dustup) and cannot carry any weapons while he's in Canada. Molina also kicked in $500 to a Toronto women's shelter and another $500 that he'd forfeit should he violate any of the terms.

Following the hearing, Hilton's Toronto attorney, Brian Greenspan, told reporters that he thought Molina's apology was pretty lame and that he was merely "trying to excuse his actions" by pointing to the openly gay blogger's homosexual slur.

Hilton already came under fire from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for the taunt, and eventually apologized.

He still has a civil suit pending against Molina seeking more than $25,000 in damages for a black eye and "emotional distress."

Shortly after the smackdown and after he twittered fans to call the cops to come to his aid, Hilton posted a tearful, over-the-top online video rant explaining how he was assaulted by a member of the Peas posse.

Will.i.am posted his own video in response, in which he called out the blogger for his trash talk and denied being the one to blame Hilton for the beatdown.
