For once in his tumultuous life, Roman Polanski isn't going anywhere.

Neither the lobbying of his own legal team nor some A-list Hollywood types could convince the Swiss Justice Ministry to release the Oscar-winning filmmaker from a Zurich jail. Officials declined to free Polanski in a ruling today, one week after he was apprehended on an international warrant stemming from a 31-year-old statutory rape conviction.

Now Polanski will have to sweat it out behind bars as his legal team battles in a separate court to prevent his extradition back to California. No word yet when that hearing will happen, but it's expected by the end of the month.

The decision not to let him out on bail or house arrest was made after the government deemed the Polish-born Polanski to be a high flight risk.

No doubt Kirstie Alley would agree.
