Kiefer: Sorry for Being Butt-Head

Apparently it's hard to break character sometimes, or so TV's Jack Bauer tells Jimmy Fallon

Apparently Kiefer Sutherland's role as Jack Bauer went a little too far to his head—and unfortunately the guy who got in his way.

The 24 star turned up on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night to plug the DVD release of his Fox series' seventh season and offered a mea culpa for the now infamous incident earlier this month when he was busted for allegedly head-butting designer Jack McCollough at a Met Costume Institute Gala afterparty.

"The last time I saw you, we went out to dinner and then...what happens? I just want to know, how close was I from being on the receiving end?" quipped Fallon.

"Not even close," Sutherland replied. "Unfortunately, we can joke about it, I guess, but it's something I really regret having happened, and until it's resolved I can't talk about it."

By resolved he means the misdemeanor assault charge police brought against him for the May 5 thumping, which ended up breaking McCollough's nose.

"Do you think you're Jack Bauer?" followed up Fallon.

"Absolutely not, absolutely not," said the 42-year-old actor. "I learned that really clearly the first season."

Sutherland's camp hasn't exactly cleared the air about what went down that night, but various reports indicate the thesp was acting in Brooke Shields' defense after she was bumped into by the Proenza Schouler codesigner.

For her part, Shields has called both men friends, and said Sutherland "has always been a gentleman in her company."

Sutherland's arraignment is scheduled for June 22.
