The passion of the wife has run dry.

Mel Gibson's wife of 28 years, Robyn Gibson, filed for divorce from the Oscar-winning director-actor, citing the ever-popular "irreconcilable differences."

"Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," the estranged couple said in a joint statement issued through their publicist, Alan Nierob.

Robyn's petition, which was signed Thursday and filed this morning in Los Angeles Superior Court, lists their separation date as "to be determined," but the Gibsons have apparently been living apart for some time.

In Gibson's counterpetition, also filed today, they parted ways Aug. 26, 2006—about a month after the actor's DUI arrest and subsequent PR nightmare.

They married in June 1980 and have seven children together, though only one—son Tom, who turns 10 tomorrow—is a minor. Robyn is seeking joint physical and legal custody of the boy, as well as spousal support.

According to her filing, she is also seeking "miscellaneous jewelry" and some of the couple's property assets.

Gibson's net worth has been estimated at upward of $900 million.
