While we were definitely hoping for a more daring look from Gaga, how can we complain when she looked so damn good? Even though the long black locks were one of the many wigs she wore throughout the night, we loved how the inky tresses contrasted with her alabaster skin. For someone who usually wears a face full of theatrical makeup, we're dying to know the "Applause" singer's skin secrets because her skin is flawless with a capital "f."
Jennifer was divalicious last night with her blunt bangs and multi-colored eye shadow winged eye. We loved how her makeup artist added a rich blue to Jennifer's lower lash line to give this look a more VMAs feel, yet left her lips nude to ensure the eyes were the focus.
Leave it Miley to channel early Gwen Stafani meets Hellboy in the front, with a party in the back… We would have liked this ‘do a lot more if she had committed to the knots and turned this into more of a Bjork by knotting that terrible back flap. And by the way, we scoured through hundreds of pics to try and find one where her tongue wasn't hanging out of her mouth but couldn't find any. Based on the fact that the "We Can't Stop" singer's tongue was hanging out of her month 90% of the night, her lipstick should win a Moon Man for its impressive performance.
Talking about a party in the back… Rihanna showed off her spikes in the front and party in the back mullet at last night's awards. We never thought we would hear ourselves say "wow, that mullet looks good" but we're the first to admit—girl knows how to rock a mullet. It didn't hurt that her makeup was perfection—a subtle kitten eye matched with a matte fire engine red lip—making her look a perfect mash-up of retro and glamour.
Really, with the grill?? The first thing we thought of when we saw Katy on the red carpet with her metallic teeth was that she reminded us of our eighth grade yearbook pictures. She looks like she has a mouthful of braces and we just don't understand the reasoning behind it! Another pretty girl making bad decisions… (We're just talking about the grill, by the way)
Finally! A pretty girl making good decisions! We thought Taylor's faux bob with retro pin curls was one of the best looks of the night. Coupled with icy blue smoked eyes and a shiny red lip, the songstress was ready for her close-up.
If we were at the hair salon standing beside Rita when she lopped off her locks we would have instructed the stylist to give her this exact look. We love the blunt cut blown stick straight, which is sophisticated yet still edgy. While her skin looked great, we could have definitely done without the matte nude lipstick, which totally washed her out.
Shailene looked tres chic with her slicked back, newly shorn hair and grey-lined hazel eyes. While we liked how the grey eyeliner brought out the different flecks of colors in her eyes, we would have loved to see a little pop of color to really punch up this look. Whether it would be a green eyeliner along the lower lash line or a matte fuchsia lip, Shailene is only 21 and she needs to have some fun with her makeup!
Even though Coco also slicked back her new short hair she looked more Grease than chic. Perhaps she's at a loss for how to style her new pixie bob or maybe it was the ‘do paired with the leather jacket, but all we could think of us was "Grease Lightening" when we saw this model on the red carpet.
We wouldn't have changed a thing on Selena last night. Yes, we know the look was tame and she's young enough to go edgy but come on, how great did she look last night? The "Best Pop Video" winner rocked her side-parted pin straight locks, black kitten eyes, and raspberry red lips. Perfection.
For someone who always plays it beyond safe both on and off screen, we were really hoping Allison would use the opportunity of the VMAs to take a couple risks with her look. So much for that… The Girls star's coiffed updo and subtle makeup made us wonder if she went straight from Grandma's dinner party on the Upper East Side to Brooklyn for the VMAs.
When we saw Melissa from afar we were on the fence about her new blond locks. Then when we saw the close-ups we quickly vaulted to the side of the disapproving fence. It's like the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star took every necessary step to look artificial last night. From the blond hair to the tarantula leg lashes, she looked like she was trying out for the drag queen version of herself. And let's face it… even a drag queen from Jersey wouldn't wear visible lip liner with a pale pink lip. Shame, shame.
