We know Maria Menounos meant well… She figured since she was attending the People StyleWatch Denim Awards presented by GILT last night she should channel the iconic 50s, when denim made such a huge statement. Going for a little retro is one thing… but this is just one big teased mess.

We so badly want to focus on the Extra host's brown smoky eyes and flawless skin, but we can't seem to look away from that tornado of hair that looks like it's about to start spinning and causing mass destruction.

Beauty Bailout: We think the problem here is Maria just has too much hair to pull off a full pompadour.  If she insisted on this retro look, we would have given her a pompadour at the crown of her head and thrown the rest of her hair in a high ponytail.

Get this look by blowing out your hair. By no means does it have to be perfect! Take a Rat Tail Comb (a comb with a pointy end) and part your hair on one side and gather the hair at the crown of your head and pulling it forward.  Once you pull it forward try and use the pointy edge of the comb to even out the hair section (the part around the section should be in a general arch shape). Twist the hair and clip it out of your way.

Take a large paddle brush or barrel brush and brush the rest of your hair up into a high ponytail, making sure to smooth out any bumps.  Spray a flexible hold hair spray like White Sands Infinity Hair Spray and smooth baby hairs along your pulled ponytail.

Next, unclip your front hair and section off the back. Spray the section with a few spritzes of hairspray to give the hair grip and then use your rat tail comb to backcomb (tease) the roots. Once hair has enough teased volume, flip it back and out of the way.

Take the middle section of hair and follow the same steps, but tease it even more since this is where you want the most volume. Flip it back and then tease the front (not too much or you'll end up looking like a cone head).

Next, use the comb to smooth out the poof.  Pull all the ends together of your poof and pull them towards the base of your ponytail. Push the poof forward to get the right volume and spray with hair spray. Then, take the ends of your poof and wrap them around your ponytail holder and secure with a bobby pin. Voila! Rockabilly queen!

Just remember that every pompadour has its limits.  If you tease to your heart's content you can end up looking like a Muppet after an electric storm.  Or, if you end up putting all your long hair into the pompadour like poor Maria, you end looking like, well… a used Q-tip. No bueno!
