Remember that breathless post you saw yesterday about how the Venice Film Fest was going down the tubes fashionwise? Looks like we panicked for nothing, because here come the evening gowns after all.

Our first official red-carpet duel pits Aussie stunner Naomi Watts against homegrown fashionista Kate Hudson, who are promoting their film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, at the Italian festival. The actresses both wore nude gowns—insert your own naked wrestling joke here—but in our esteemed opinions, only one gal is a the clear winner.

Let's start with Watts, who made the rounds with her hot, punkinheaded baby daddy Liev Schrieber in a floor-length Marchesa. For the fashion students we will note, with admiration, the nude lace overlay, the bateau neckline, the Depression-era-inspired ruffle sleeves. It's a fabulous gown—for someone taller.

Now we move on to Kate Hudson. The former Mrs. Chris Robinson nearly gave us a heart attack yesterday with her casual-Friday arrival at the fest, but she's since cleaned up nicely in a Versace embellished with Swarovski crystals.

Unlike Watts, who appears a bit too buried under all that lace, Hudson cuts a sleek figure highlighted by a pearlescent Edie Parker clutch and Fabergé jewelry. Even her hair is perfect—not too messy, not too "done."

Naomi, we love you, but even an A-list star can have her B-list days.
