The dark-horse nominee arrives to watch over the ceremony (and bestow pity laughs upon Jennifer Aniston) in a black Elie Saab gown. But with everyone else from Miley Cyrus to Sarah Jessica Parker opting for airy princess gowns, Angelina Jolie's big bangs and dramatic dress make her look more like an evil Disney queen.
Miley Cyrus looks ready to join the rest of Disney's princess supergroup in this heavily embellished Zuhair Murad gown. The dress is absolutely stunning with its tiered petal skirt and pounds of crystals. Would it be more stunning on someone a little older and more graceful? Of course, but what would a Miley red carpet appearance be without a dress fit for someone twice her age?
Until this point, Freida Pinto had been killing it one red carpet appearance after another, so we had some pretty high expectations for the Slumdog beauty at the Oscars. And everyone knows what happens when you build something up too much—you get blue lace with (shudder) '80s flair. Better luck next year, Freida!
If Carrie Bradshaw were gonna take a wild stab at dressing appropriately for the Oscars she might have come up with something like this over-the-top frock from Dior Haute Couture. But we're sort of disappointed Sarah Jessica Parker went for something so pouffy and sequined. Hey, SJP, this is Hollywood—not Disneyland—you're dressing for.
Beyoncé, we just can’t take this anymore. Please stop assaulting us with your aggressively curve-hugging mermaid gowns. And it’s not just us you’re hurting; we’ve never seen you look so stiff and uncomfortable before. And what's even worse than the gaudy brocade print is that you did this to yourself—the dress is from your own fashion label, House of Dereon Couture.
Marisa Tomei never likes to play it safe; some days she’ll just use a throw pillow to cover up or a pirate shirt and other times it's all about poodle hair. And this silver-gray Versace Atelier gown with its swirling layers of pleats is another daring example in a beautiful rather than kooky way. As for the soft hair and makeup, they just tie the whole look together perfectly.
It seems as though Amy Adams has literally emerged out of the red carpet and so far has only managed to free her top half, which is especially awesome because of this spectacular Fred Leighton necklace. We can't wait until she manages to free the rest of herself from the pesky rug so we can see what her dress looks like. It's supposed to be Carolina Herrera.
Anne Hathaway’s gorgeous Giorgio Armani sparkles against her fair skin with its rows of clear paillettes and Swarovski crystals. It’s like her way of saying, “Yeah, I know this is Kate Winslet’s night. But seriously, I look like the real winner, right?” And we've got to give it to her—Anne really is the queen of the red carpet tonight.
We feel like we’ve been over this so many times with Jessica Biel. She has such red carpet potential but somehow manages to sabotage herself every single time. Take this frumpy ivory Prada gown with its giant folds and awkward hem. Add to that some messy undone hair and we're just about ready to give up trying to help her.
It's not gonna win any prizes for daring design, but Kate Winslet is perfectly elegant in this asymmetrical Atelier Yves St. Laurent gown with black lace overlay. Still, we're sort of underwhelmed. The look works for career longevity—it does say serious actress—but doesn't do much to generate red carpet buzz.
No time like the Academy Awards to pull out a stunning and elaborate wedding dress. Penélope Cruz’s vintage Balmain Haute Couture dress is definitely the bridal gown of our dreams with its delicate lace print and chiffon detailing. We're not quite sure what it has to do with this red carpet event, but the woman did win an award, so she knows what she's doing.
