The big twists aren't secrets from the cast. We were told creator Sam Esmail sat down with the key cast and "went over the season arc with each of them," Kor Adana said. "They were all aware of the big twists when we were still writing the scripts."
It may surprise you that a show as mysterious and gasp-inducing as Mr. Robot doesn't employ the use of code names on set. "We are very good at avoiding any language that hinted at the reveal. Sometimes we'd say, 'after the reveal…' but there were no code names," Kor Adana told us.
To prepare for her role as an FBI agent on the show, Grace Gummer watched...The Real Housewives of New Jersey. "I watched a show called The Real Housewives of New Jersey...I got the Jerz down," Gummer told Seth Meyers about researching her New Jersey-native character.
Rami Malek's Elliot style has become synonymous with the show. "I went into the barber the other day and I was sitting down and she came by and she looked at me—I hadn't been in there before—she just started laughing at me, which just made me feel kind of awkward," Malek told Seth Meyers. "And then a few minutes later she came by and said, ‘I'm sorry for laughing at you. That was weird. But everyone comes in here and asks for your haircut and now you're here, asking for your haircut.'"
But where and when does Elliot get his hair did? That's not a secret Mr. Robot will ever tell.
Despite being on a show about hacking, not everybody is great with technology. And then there's Stephanie Corneliussen. "I try," she said at the Summer TCA Press Tour when asked about being good with tech. "My father was one of the first programmers in the late '60s, before the Internet, in Denmark. So he has vast knowledge about technology that he's tried to teach me, but I can't keep up with all the millennials."
Rami Malek's Elliot wore several hoodies throughout seasons one and two of Mr. Robot, but did you know the original, yes the first Mr. Robot hoodie, came from the Emmy-nominated actor himself? It came from his personal wardrobe. "It is my hoodie…We kept trying on hoodies you know for the pilot and nothing seemed to fit particularly well. Nothing seemed to look particularly great, not really lived in," Malek said. "I have mine and you always wear it so…There's only so much that a tried and true hoodie can handle and you need to bring in some reinforcements. I've opted to wear that one as much as possible."
Legend has it once creator Sam Esmail saw it, he knew it was the right one. Before that, they had gone through several hoodies for the character.
Stephanie Corneliussen's Joanna has done a lot of pretty...questionable things on Mr. Robot, like inducing childbirth with a fork in the middle of her kitchen to save her husband from police questioning. "It's always scary. There are definitely some things, that lobster fork inducing your own labor scene in our first season," she said when asked about her reaction to some of her character's finer moments. "I mean, I was completely mortified when I read that and I looked at [creator Sam Esmail] and I was like, 'We can't put this on TV. You know we can't put this on TV.' And apparently, it did and it was a big thing...I love that Joanna gets to push the limits, right? She gets to walk on the edge. And for some reason, it's accepted because she does it."
By the way, she gave the fork back.
Shooting Mr. Robot can be a taxing process, especially with how the show shoots—out of sequence. Grace Gummer's first season on the show sent her to hospital. "By the end I ended up in the hospital with a concussion at 7 in the morning," she told Seth Meyers about a stunt that went wrong.
We weren't kidding when we said Mr. Robot was full of secrets. The show even kept a very special guest star under wraps: Alf. Paul Fusco, the original voice of Alf and his wife came on set to bring the character to the Mr. Robot universe. Alf appears in a (hallucination?) sequence when Elliot is disassociated during a severe beating. Who got the biggest kick out of Alf's time on set? "Definitely Adam Penn [the writer of that episode]. He stayed on set for most of the day. Meeting Paul was like a childhood dream come true for many of us…but mostly him," Kor Adana, Mr. Robot's technology producer told E! News.
Carly Chaikin stole the show on Suburgatory for three seasons and that almost cost her the role of a lifetime on Mr. Robot. "Well, my favorite story actually is Sam [Esmail] and Chad Hamilton refused to see me at first for this part and Susie Farris, the amazing casting director, really fought for me and was like, 'Trust me. She's not actually like that,'" Chaikin said at TCA when asked about going from playing the ditzy blonde on the ABC sitcom to the hacker extraordinaire. "And so for me, in my career, I couldn't ask for a better job coming off—I mean, in general, but especially coming off of Suburgatory and having that. I like to bring depth to every character I do, so I feel like I did try and do that with Dalia. But Darlene is definitely more up my alley and is really a dream role that I've always wanted to do. And, of course, I love playing a smart person and not the, like, blonde deadpan, but that, of course, was so much fun. But this is definitely a better representation of the kind of work I want to do as an actor. And being able to play the strong female in something as opposed to a more secondary side character."
Grace Gummer, a season two addition to the series, told E! News her parents are her biggest supporters. "My parents both watch everything I do and they're just so excited for me to be a part of something I like," Gummer told us. Wonder if Meryl Streep has one of those fsociety masks at home...
Mr. Robot seems to be a sprawling story with new twists around every corner, but there is a plan in place. Creator Sam Esmail knows the ending."He does know the ending," Kor Adana told us. "The writer's room is aware of how the story concludes."
