Carly Chaikin stole the show on Suburgatory for three seasons and that almost cost her the role of a lifetime on Mr. Robot. "Well, my favorite story actually is Sam [Esmail] and Chad Hamilton refused to see me at first for this part and Susie Farris, the amazing casting director, really fought for me and was like, 'Trust me. She's not actually like that,'" Chaikin said at TCA when asked about going from playing the ditzy blonde on the ABC sitcom to the hacker extraordinaire. "And so for me, in my career, I couldn't ask for a better job coming off—I mean, in general, but especially coming off of Suburgatory and having that. I like to bring depth to every character I do, so I feel like I did try and do that with Dalia. But Darlene is definitely more up my alley and is really a dream role that I've always wanted to do. And, of course, I love playing a smart person and not the, like, blonde deadpan, but that, of course, was so much fun. But this is definitely a better representation of the kind of work I want to do as an actor. And being able to play the strong female in something as opposed to a more secondary side character."
