Fashion designer Zac Posen shared what it took to prep for the 2016 Met Gala, including how a red-carpet worthy dress is made.
Where it all began—the origin of the under-structure started in my New York City atelier.
One of the many parts of my process: the under-structure. We used a hollow under-structure, which allowed for Claire Danes to glide into the dress.
The beginning of my draping process: I like to come in on the weekend when it is calm. I turn on my music and focus. I started draping a month prior to the Met Ball.
Handing over one part of my drape to my atelier.

The first lighting test of the dress in the atelier.
Finalizing my drape on the bodice of the gown.
It's all about the details and proportions in my drapes. It's a true balance of emotion and technology.
Picking up my Brooks Brothers shirts for the Met.
Choosing my Kentshire shirt studs to finalize my look.
Red-carpet ready.
Ready to go—Claire took my breath away. Modern-day galactic Cinderella.
Maneuvering through the streets of NYC, we needed a mini bus to fit Claire and the dress comfortably.
