Prince Dead at 57
World renowned pop artist Prince has died at age 57. The singer was found dead at his estate in Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota Thursday, two sources told E! News. Prince's rep later confirmed his death.
Superstar
He rose to fame in the late '70s and was most popular in the '80s and early '90s, with hits such as "Little Red Corvette," "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," "Cream," "Diamonds and Pearls" and "Purple Rain."
The Artist Formerly Known as Prince
He famously parted ways with Warner Bros. Records in the 1990s amid disagreements over his contract, namely with regard to ownership rights. Before he left the label, Prince identified himself by a "love symbol" and was known as The Artist Formally Known as Prince. He also sported the word "Slave" on his face during concerts to signal his protest. He changed his name back to Prince in 2000 and released another label with Warner Bros. Records in 2014.
Finding His Religion
In 2001, following a two-year debate with Larry Graham, Prince became a Jehovah's Witness. "I don't see it really as a conversion," he later told The New Yorker. "More, you know, it's a realization. It's like Morpheus and Neo in The Matrix."
1999
Mayte Garcia, seen here, was married to Prince from 1996 to 2000. In 1996, they had a son, Boy Gregory, who tragically died at just 1-week-old of natural causes.
Critical Success
"Oh, I love critics," he told The Guardian in a 2014 interview. "Because they love me. It's not a joke. They care. See, everybody knows when somebody's lazy, and now, with the internet, it's impossible for a writer to be lazy because everybody will pick up on it. In the past, they said some stuff that was out of line, so I just didn't have anything to do with them. Now it gets embarrassing to say something untrue, because you put it online and everyone knows about it, so it's better to tell the truth."
Companion
Prince was married to Manuela Testolini, seen here, from 2001 to 2006.
A Wonder
Prince performed with Stevie Wonder at the 2006 BET Awards.
Legendary
Prince shared the stage with Mariah Carey at Apollo Theater's 75th Anniversary Gala in 2009.
Online Uncertainty
In 2010, Prince famously declared in an interview with The Daily Mirror that "The Internet's completely over."
"I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else," he said. "They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it."
In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, he clarified, "What I meant was that the Internet was over for anyone who wants to get paid, and I was right about that...Tell me a musician who's got rich off digital sales. Apple's doing pretty good though, right?"
Across the Pond
Prince, seen here headlining a U.K. festival in 2011, was revered around the world.
