There’s something about Mariah Carey’s consistency that’s admirable. Tight black dresses, serious cleavage and just the right amount of bling. While there are some stars out there who bore us with their inability to try anything new, there's something comforting in knowing Mariah is always out there just being Mariah.
Penélope Cruz is usually a red carpet rock star, so it's a bummer she's not bringing it to the Globes. This black Atelier Versace mermaid gown is so busy—with the old-lady lace top, ribbon-striped bodice and tiered skirt—yet a total bore at the same time. That's quite a feat she accomplished.

Dayum, check out Anna Paquin! We've never seen the True Blood star so straight-up glamorous and glitzy in a plunging Stella McCartney gown covered in metallic paillettes, vintage jewels from Stephen Russell and a soft, pulled-back 'do. The babe knows this is her time to shine and deserves every golden moment in the spotlight.
Obviously Kate Hudson didn't do a practice red carpet run-through at home before she came to the big show. If she did, she would've realized this origami Marchesa gown looks like some pillowcases artfully stapled to a bed sheet (complete with goose feathers tucked into her top!), and this disaster could've been averted.
This Zac Posen number is so perfectly quirky that it fits the 30 Rock star-writer-creator Tina Fey so well. Between the tiers, the retro calf-length full skirt and crazy snake print, everything is just "off" enough that it works for someone who makes a career of being funny. Also, this is one instance where the umbrella totally makes the outfit. And how many times do you get to say that?
Whoa—that’s a whole lotta gown for one girl! Since Lea Michele is the only Glee castmember up for Best Actress in a Television Series, Comedy, she decided to go all out in this dramatic princess diva dress by Oscar de la Renta. It's almost too big and dark, it kind of makes us wish she would have gone light and fun like her TV show.
January Jones told Ryan Seacrest what she looks for when picking out a dress: "Avoid the ‘60s. I don’t want to walk around as Betty all day." OK, we get it—she's over Mad Men fashion. But if the alternative is this concert choir look, black Lanvin gown and matchy headband, we really wouldn’t give her a hard time if she went all Betty Draper on us.
Whereas her costar January Jones shies away from her Mad Men style, Christina Hendricks embraces and owns the sexy, stylized vintage look. With its ruffles and rucching, this peachy champagne Christian Siriano gown hugs her curves in all the right places and shows off her golden globes so nicely that Mariah must be green with envy.
Oh, Julia Roberts. Did you really think your shiny beautiful locks and that megawatt smile alone would help you sail through the Golden Globes? From the chin up, you are gorge, but this black vintage Yves Saint Laurent dress and your pointy-toe pumps are so cazh, like something you'd wear to dinner. Would it have killed you to dress up just a little?!
It’s safe to say Up in the Air's Anna Kendrick has yet to hit her fashion stride. It's quite a shame too, the best supporting actress nominee is so cute and perky we really want her to succeed. But this Marchesa gown is too fussy with the one-shoulder ruffle and floral embellishments that it overtakes her tiny frame and makes her look almost matronly. But we're not giving up on her just yet, there are still a few awards shows to go.
Kudos to Sandra Bullock for attempting such a bold purple Bottega Veneta strapless frock at the Globes. The color is rich and regal, but the skirt is sheer and glossy and reminds us too much of Easter cellophane. Sorry, Sandy, your acting may have won you an award tonight, but your ensemble is a bust.
Avatar star Zoe Saldana is über-thin, so the star can afford to add lots of volume to her tiny frame. But the extra embellishments on this deep-red Louis Vuitton gown look like ribbons and ruffles were just slapped on, and that's not the kind of bulk she wants. Rip out about half of those details, Z, and you'll be in business.
