When real life bleeds into reality TV, sometimes things can get a bit too shocking for networks and viewers to handle. In honor of scandal week at E! News, take a look back at some of reality TV's biggest outrages and find out what they're up to today.
A recently unearthed police report filed in Arkansas states that19 Kids and Counting patriarch Jim Bob Duggar and wife Michelle brought their eldest son, Josh Duggar, in to the Children's Safety Center in Springdale, Ark., in 2006 to be interviewed in response to an accusation that he had sexually abused underage girls in 2002 and 2003.
While the original police report was expunged in order to protect the names of the victims, the family has spoken out about the case.
"Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret,"Josh said in a statement to People. "I hurt others, including my family and close friends. I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life."
19 Kids and Counting was ultimately canceled but several Duggar family members have been featured on a TLC spin-off titled Counting On. While Anna has made an appearance and voiced her hopes to save her marriage, Josh has yet to be featured.
TLC canceled Here Comes Honey Boo—the reality series following former kid pageant star Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson and her family—after reports that Mama June (June Shannon) was dating a convicted child molester surfaced.
"TLC has cancelled the series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and ended all activities around the series, effective immediately," the network said in a statement. "Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority. TLC is faithfully committed to the children's ongoing comfort and well-being."
However, Mama June claims that she is not dating Mark McDaniel. "Just got a phone call this morning from TLC and as of right now there will be no more production of the show…the statement of me dating a sex offender is totally untrue. Pumpkin has openly said that I did not—that I'm not dating him and also his son," she said. "I would not ever, ever, ever put my kids in danger. I love my kids too much. That is my past. I have not seen that person in 10 years and don't seem to want to see that person."
Today, the family lives in Georgia and has had far fewer TV opportunities. Mama June and Sugar Bear went on Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars. As for Alana, she recently admitted that no cameras provide a mix of emotions. "I was kinda happy with that and at the same time I was sad so I was sappy," she shared on Oprah: Where Are They Now.
Fans of The Real Housewives of Atlanta know that Kenya Moore and Porsha Williams have had arguments in the past, but nothing compared to the vicious brawl that went down in part one of the hit reality series' reunion special . Throughout the entire taping, tensions were high when Kenya kept putting a scepter and later a megaphone in Porsha's face, but everything escalated when Kenya accused Porsha of cheating on her ex-husband.
Fast-forward to 2016 where the two Bravo stars remain co-stars. In fact, they filmed a new season of the show together this summer.
Rachel Frederickson, a 24-year-old voiceover artist, became The Biggest Loser and won $250,000 during the live season 15 finale. Rachel started the show at 260 pounds and lost 155 pounds, weighing 105 pounds. She lost 59.62 percent of her body weight causing a storm of outraged fans on Twitter who are concerned that the contestant has lost too much weight. Standing at only 5'4", according to Weight Watchers, the healthy weight range for a woman of that height it between 117-146 pounds.
Today, Rachel has a personal website geared towards health and fitness. And during an interview with Today, the reality star shared her mindset after hearing from critics. "There will always be other voices in life. The trouble comes when you stop listening to your own. I am committed to trusting my decisions and standing strong behind them," she shared. "I found strength in this struggle and I am listening to my own voice again!"
In January 2014, The Bachelor's Juan Pablo Galavis offered a very candid answer when he was asked his thoughts about the possibility of a gay bachelor starring on the ABC hit reality series."I respect [gay people], but I honestly don't think it is a good example for kids to watch that on TV," the former Venezuelan soccer star explained at the Winter TCA Press Tour. Following these remarks, The Bachelor quickly issued an apology on his Facebook page saying his comments were "taken out of context" and he has "nothing but respect for gay people and their families.
As for Juan's dating life today, E! News recently confirmed that his latest girlfriend is dating Venezuelan model and TV host Osmariel Villalobos.
The A&E hit series' patriarch was "placed under hiatus from filming definitely" in light of anti-gay remarks he made in an interview with GQ, including comparing homosexuality to bestiality. Even before being suspended by the network and GLAAD issuing a response to his comments, Robertson released a statement after the backlash:
"My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and mean are meant to be together," he said. "However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me."
The show ultimately returned and entered it's 10th season. The season finale will air in August 2016.
In season 14 of the ABC dating series, Rozlyn Papa, one of the contestants competing for Jake Pavelka's heart, was found to be romantically involved with a behind-the-scenes crewmember. She was promptly eliminated from the show. "It was incredibly unfortunate," host Chris Harrison said about the situation. "Horrible decisions were made. This is something that we took very serious, and it's something that we couldn't just sit by...because of things in the past. This was embarrassing for us, for Jake, and for the other women, so we were like, let's nip this in the bud, take care of it, and that's what we did."
According to Twitter, Rozlyn is now Marketing Director in RVA who proudly proclaims in her bio that she "survived The Bachelor."
Where to even begin with this one? The CBS reality series made headlines all summer long in 2013 due to certain contestants making racial and homophobic remarks that were obviously caught on camera. Spencer Clawson even made crude child pornography jokes as a means to pull a prank on fellow houseguest McCrae Olson. Aaryn Gries and GinaMarie Zimmerman both lost their jobs when their employers witnessed the girls making controversial statements on the show.
Since then, Aaryn has given birth to a baby girl while GinaMarie remains focused on fitness and her family. As for Spencer, he's laying low and hasn't tweeted since 2013. Perhaps the public eye wasn't his thing.
The TLC reality series that chronicles the child pageant circuit sparked an outrage in 2011 when 3-year-old contestant Paisley Dickey was dressed up in the prostitution costume that Julia Roberts famously wore in Pretty Woman. The Parents Television Council had a field day with that episode. "We have a serious problem when The Learning Channel features a toddler, who probably hasn't even learned to read, dressed as a prostitute showing off her sexy strut," PTC spokeswoman Melissa Henson told us about Paisley's outfit. "There's no question, TV executives are complicit in robbing these small kids of their childhood. For years we've seen adult sexuality being inappropriately and aggressively foisted on innocent young children, but children today are being sexualized at younger and younger ages. All available data suggests they will suffer for it in life."
Today, Paisley is older, wiser and even richer. According to ABC, the former beauty pageant contestant became a global star and millionaire, thanks to her hugely popular reality-TV show in Germany and her company, Glitzy Girl, through which she offers her own line of jewelry, lip gloss and velour hoodies.
Jonny, who ironically called himself "Jonny Fairplay", pulled a fast one on his fellow castmates during season seven, Survivor: Pearl Islands. To gain sympathy, he had a friend come to the island and tell him that his grandmother had died. Jonny broke down in tears as he was consoled by his competitors. It was later revealed that he had constructed the plan before filming began and that his grandmother was still very much alive. Host Jeff Probst called it "the greatest lie in Survivor history."
Jonny continues to recap episodes of the hit CBS reality show.
The reality stars were charged in July of 2014 with 39 counts of fraud, including conspiracy to defraud lenders and illegally obtain mortgages, mail and wire fraud, bank fraud and allegedly hiding assets and income during a bankruptcy case. On Oct. 2, Joe was sentenced to 41 months in jail and Teresa was sentenced to 15 months.
Teresa has since served her sentence and has returned to the Real Housewives of New Jersey with her family. Joe is currently serving his sentence.
The season-two contestant was a fan-favorite on the Fox competition, but the singer was kicked off the show after she admitted that she had posed topless for an adult website five years before the show. Frenchie said she was just trying to make money for school at the time, but the producers still refused to let her sing. In season six, Antonella Barbra had a similar situation, but she was allowed to stay in the competition. She insisted the naked pics that leaked were private and released without her permission. Still, Frenchie fans were outraged that Antonella was allowed to stay on Idol despite the nude photos.
Frenchie would later compete on The Voice in 2011 and come out as bisexual. She continues to perform across the country and prove to be an R&B powerhouse.
To this day, Angelea's disqualification from the CW reality series remains a mystery. In the finale, judge Nigel Barker announced that the network "learned information from Angelea that disqualifies her from the competition," meaning that the final decision was just between Lisa D'Amato and Allison Harvard. No other explanation was given beyond that, but Angela later did an interview with the website SireSays claiming that she won cycle 17 and that she was kicked off due to "hypocrisy". Rumors circulated that it was because she blabbed on social media that she won ANTM before the finale aired, but Angelea insisted she would never do that.
Corey, who was eliminated in season two of the Fox singing competition, came forward two years later and claimed he had a sexual relationship with judge Paula Abdul. She denied the allegations, and the network found Paula not guilty after investigating their relationship, even though Corey allegedly had evidence (phone records) to prove otherwise.
Despite the scandal, Paula has stayed in good graces with Fox where she has been able to serve as a judge on their hit series So You Think You Can Dance.
