Update: Mystery solved! Looks like Nick Fury has found his sidekick. According to Deadline, How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders is going to be suiting up alongside Mr. Jackson, but not as The Wasp, as we guessed earlier. Instead, Smulders will be taking on the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill.

Samuel L. Jackson is on the lookout for an avenging angel.

The actor, who's set to appear as Marvel's spy chief Nick Fury in The Avengers, Thor, Captain America and other flicks—until the end of time—talked to Jimmy Fallon last night and dropped a few juicy tidbits about the upcoming superhero flick.

But the reveal that has Hollywood buzzing is that the star and director Joss Whedon are close to finding him a female sidekick.

So who's it gonna be, and what else did Jackson have to say?

"I gotta screen test, like, five actresses on Friday. They have this new character that's my sidekick that's with me all the time."

While the actor didn't reveal any names, according to the Hollywood Reporter, right now four actresses are set to try out for the role. On that list are Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Morena Baccarin (V) and Jessica Lucas (Melrose Place).

While Marvel wouldn't comment on which character the actresses were vying for, we're going to take a stab that it's for the role of Janet van Dyne, aka The Wasp. After all, it can't be just Nick and his boys' club taking on Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, right?
