ABC/RON TOMWe might still be emotional after the adorable baby was ripped from Meredith's arms but now is not the time for tears. No way. The doctors are growing up, standing on their own two feet, flying the coop and all sorts of maturation metaphors which extend well past the E.R.
But new adult stuff is hard, right? So which docs soared and which sank? And can our favorite couples with trouble in the marriage department fix what's broken? Find out what happened on tonight's Grey's Anatomy.
WHAT WE LEARNED
No Animals Were Harmed in the Making of This Episode: Pretty ominous warning at the top of the show, right? We braced ourselves for the worst: a deer surgery, Meredith's dying dog. But our worries weren't warranted, and it was actually just for practice. Dr. Pretty Eyes Avery (Jesse Williams) might be the (current) winner of the Mark-Lexie-Jackson triangle but he was passed up on the surgery front. Speaking of Lexie (Chyler Leigh), 18 minutes into the episode and still no sign of her. Yes, we kept looking at the clock. This episode was all about the surgeons making the tough decisions. And for the benefit of a child's future prom date, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) swoops in to save the day. And we are reminded again: Where is Lexie? It must be her day off.
Awkward Roommates: Both Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) are feeling the strain of their rocky relationships. Cristina and Owen (Kevin McKidd) are walking on eggshells around each other since Cristina went through with the abortion. After a day of avoidance and painfully awkward small talk, who knew food poisoning could bridge the gap? Alas, bad Chinese cannot fix a glaringly empty crib but a framed Post-it can. Can we just talk about how happy we are for that Post-it? So happy. We almost forgot why they were still married. Derek is upset and doesn't trust Mere, but that promise made on a Post-it will keep them fighting for another day. Seriously we think this Meredith-Derek chat saved a rather so-so episode. Saved it.
Not Here to Make Friends: April (Sarah Drew) isn't the only one who wants to be liked by her peers. She's still struggling to control the masses as chief resident. Clearly she doesn't get that getting those troops to fall in line is a lot like herding cats. Hilarious and frustrating. New chief of surgery Owen has a stubborn cat of his own and we're pretty sure he won't win her over. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is pretty resistant to change and is always loyal to Chief Webber (James Pickens Jr.). Haven't we been here before? It seems like in the past few years the chief has retired/fired/quit every other episode. Wonder if it'll stick this time? He's not exactly fitting in in the doctor's lounge. He said "goodbye" to a sandwich after all.

WHAT LIES AHEAD
Dr. Mama Avery: Debbie Allen is coming to town as Dr. Avery's Dr. Mama! We know Jackson struggles on a daily basis with being too pretty and having a famous last name. (Cue playing the world's smallest violin.) But will being the son of a visiting doc hurt or help his chances of scrubbing in on a groundbreaking surgery? Well, it's no fun if a family reunion is drama free!
Swept Under the Rug: No emotions stay buried on Grey's Anatomy forever. In fact they usually come back in the worst way possible. We'd be willing to bet a solo surgery that this will come back to haunt Cristina and Owen. Kevin McKidd tells us: "I don't think that's the end of it. It's such a big issue. These things always come back. I've noticed in life you can't brush these things under the carpet."
