Dancing With the Stars: Perfection Is Achieved While Maks and the Judges Kiss and Make Up

Plus, flop goes the leaderboard again as the insta-dance makes its return

Yes, you just saw Maks Chmerkovskiy plant a kiss on Len Goodman's cheek.

What prompted the big lovefest on Monday's Dancing With the Stars, you ask? Well, it had to do with Maks and Hope Solo's No. 1 critic calling one of their dances "bloody brilliant"—and then the madness ensued from there!

And round two (the dreaded "insta-dance") was supposed to be difficult!

But before the stars had to rise to that occasion, they had to get through round one...

Rob Kardashian's opening quickstep was darn cute: He was hesitant and awkward at first, the suave nowhere to be seen, but once he had led Cheryl Burke around the floor for a few seconds, he was downright dashing!

You can bet his family loved it! Bruce and Kris Jenner, Khloé Kardashian Odom, Kourtney Kardashian, Scott Disick and little Mason (bouncing on Aunt Khloé's lap) were all there to support the surprise almost-finalist.

"Once you know what to do with your bum, everything else falls into place," praised Bruno Tonioli, who pointed out last week that Rob's très-Kardashian asset was sticking out too much while he danced.

But if anyone should be able to do a swift and powerful quickstep, it would be Hope, whose soccer-star livelihood depends on the spring in her legs. She wasn't better than Rob, but she did appear to be enjoying herself and the dance suited her.

Sure enough, Bruno noted that she had "never moved so well."

"There was so much joy and love—and that's what dancing is all about," raved Carrie Ann Inaba.

The judges were all fans of Ricki Lake's waltz, but Len Goodman warned that she'd never get "a 10 from Len" unless she tightened up her footwork—but a 10 from Bruno was enough to vault the front-runner ahead of Hope and Rob.

Nancy Grace appeared to accidentally graze Tristan MacManus' crotch at one point during their tango, but she didn't miss a beat. In fact, minus the bobble on the dip at the end, it was her cleanest, most watchable dance yet.

J.R. Martinez sure looked pleased after his waltz, and he had every reason to be. He even predicted a 30 for him and Karina Smirnoff when pressed backstage about his hope for the first perfect score of the season...

"Justin Bieber, I will never say never!" J.R. joked excitedly, name-checking last week's musical guest, after the judges silently revealed a series of 10 paddles.

And then it was time for round two.

Just like last year, you really couldn't tell on the surface that the contestants only had 20 minutes to match their dances with their music, though the scores dipped considerably.

Rob seemingly did quite well, but only managed three 8's.

Hope, meanwhile, was properly bouncy but somewhat out of control (and the rack-of-lamb fringed pants didn't mitigate that effect). Both Bruno and Carrie Ann eyeballed a few flaws, but Len jumped out of his seat in his attempt to emphasize just how "bloody brilliant" he thought their jive was.

And then, aw, Maks gave Len a smooch.

Ricki's jive was great—when she was moving! She copped to a few random pauses backstage.

"I'm sorry I disappointed everybody and didn't do my best...I wanted to come back and nail it," Ricki said ruefully.

OK, how does Nancy's routine contain a cartwheel when she supposedly didn't know she was dancing to "Upside Down"? We smell a conspiracy. Get Nancy Grace on the case!

J.R. capped off the insta-jives with an almost perfectly polished performance—there were a couple of seconds where "Tutti Frutti" didn't agree with his and Karina's routine. But it was leagues above the others, nonetheless.

Here's how the leaderboard stacked up:

J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff: (30, 30) 60
Ricki Lake & Derek Hough: (28, 24) 52
Hope Solo & Maks Chmerkovskiy: (27, 25) 52
Rob Kardashian & Cherly Burke (27, 24) 51
Nancy Grace & Tristan MacManus (24, 20): 44
