Trebek Burglar: What Is Prostitution, Alex?

Jeopardy! host's alleged burglar denies being a thief, says she's a streetwalker who just happened to be at the same hotel as Trebek but never entered his room

The woman nabbed for allegedly burgling Alex Trebek's San Francisco hotel suite has a novel defense for absconding with $650 in cash and jewelry: She was working as a prostitute.

Say what?

Per the San Francisco Chronicle, Linda Moyers claims she had an appointment with a client at the Marriott Marquis, though not with Trebek, and in fact she didn't even recognize his famous mug when she entered his hotel suite.

"I didn't even know who he was," Moyers said told the paper. "I wish I had never gone up there."

The hotel intruder's lawyer, Mark Jacobs, meanwhile told the San Francisco Exaaminer that during the incident that occurred at around 3 a.m. on July 26, the 56-year-old Moyers never actually entered the room where Trebek was sleeping with his wife, and that the client she was supposed to meet never answered the door.

As a result, he said, the 71-year-old tube star falsely identified her as the culprit and could never have seen the real burglar.

Whatever her explanation for why she was in the hotel suite, the fact is she was booked on one count of residential burglary and one count of possession of stolen property for what she allegedly did while she was inside: stealing Trebek's wallet and baubles, including a bracelet his mother gave him.

The would-be thief only got caught after Trebek sounded the alarm and chased her down the hall, rupturing his right Achilles heel in the process. Consequently, he had to undergo surgery last Friday and will be in a cast for six weeks.

Moyers was subsequently collared by hotel security and, after pleading not guilty to the charges at her arraignment, remains behind bars on $625,000 bail.

Jacobs has since stated that his client is innocent because she didn't have anything on her when caught, was there for her, ah, night job, and the stolen items were never recovered.

"Ms. Moyers didn't have any stolen property in her possession when she was arrested," said the legal eagle.

But authorities say differently, noting she tried to hide the loot near an ice machine as she fled and while the trinkets found weren't Trebek's, they were stolen from somewhere else. Not to mention the fact that she has prior convictions for pilfering from other hotels that landed her more than 12 years in the Big House.

If found guilty this time around, Moyers could face 25 years to life under California's Three Strikes law.
