As you may have heard Universal executives are reportedly thinking about developing a Bridesmaids sequel even if Kristen Wiig isn't on board.

While it seems most everyone opposes the idea of a Wiig-less follow-up (just talk to Melissa McCarthy!), the movie's director does think it's possible.

"If it had to happen, who knows?" Paul Feig told us last night at the People's Choice Awards in downtown Los Angeles. "Anything can happen. I'm an optimist."

Ideally, he'd like Wiig back.

"It would be sad, very sad" without Wiig, Feig said, adding, "I would love it to be the whole gang. I feel like if we had the right idea, I feel like everybody would be back."

Feig wants a Bridesmaids 2 to happen. "Fingers crossed," he said. "[But] the only way we'd want to make it is if it's as good or better than the first one. If we could get a script together that was great...I would hope everyone would come back and do it. We have so much fun together."

E! Online and Universal Pictures are both part of the NBCUniversal family.
