Malia Obama is thankfully out of harm's way.

The 13-year-old daughter of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama was in Mexico on Tuesday when a powerful 7.6 earthquake struck near where she is staying.

"In light of today's earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger," said a spokesperson for the first lady in a statement yesterday afternoon.

Malia was reportedly on a school-supported trip in Oaxaca when the quake hit southern Mexico.

While the White House does not normally comment on the Obama children, and had asked the media not to report on Malia's trip since she wasn't with her parents, an exception was made here in light of the earthquake.
