If you thought Click or Little Nicky was an awful addition to the Adam Sandler oeuvre, Jack and Jill, is fast on its way to topping those films in the bad department as his new cross-dressing comedy has scored the dubious 0 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
At this rate, a Razzies sweep can't be far behind.
Jack and Jill, arriving in theaters today, reportedly underwent a slew of rewrites at the behest of its star, who also produces. But apparently it wasn't much of a help.
With it's big goose egg, Jack and Jill joins a list of all-time stinkers on the popular review-aggregation site as the pro-Sarah Palin "documentary" The Undefeated and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, a nominal comedy starring Stephen Dorf and Christina Ricci. Both films came out earlier this year. The 2007 thriller One Missed Call, starring Ed Burns and Shannyn Sossamon, also earned the lowest possible score.
Jack and Jill follows family man Jack Sadelstein (Sandler), whose Thanksgiving is turned upside down by his annoying identical twin sister, Jill (also played by Sandler), who comes to visit and then refuses to move out.
The Dennis Duigan-directed flick features several of Sandler's fellow Saturday Night Live alums, including David Spade, Norm Macdonald, Tim Meadows and Dana Carvey, while Katie Holmes plays Jack's wife. The movie somehow managed to land Al Pacino for a key role and includes cameos by the likes of Regis Philbin, Shaquille O'Neal, Bruce Jenner and even Johnny Depp.
Hilarity apparently did not ensue.
As of this writing, none of the critics surveyed by Rotten Tomatoes has gone up the hill with Jack and Jill and written something close to favorable.
Instead, we get scathing reviews like this one in The Hollywood Reporter: "Jack and Jill is witless and sloppily constructed, getting by on fart gags, homeless jokes, Latino stereotypes and that old favorite, explosive chimichanga diarrhea—and no, not in an inspired Bridesmaids way. Maybe there's an audience for it, but they should be embarrassed."
Or as the New York Post opines: "It's pretty sad if you're a comic and Al Pacino is the funniest thing in your movie."
And, per Rolling Stone: "Jack and Jill is total bust, a stupefyingly unfunny and shamelessly lazy farce packed with cringe-worthy jokes and overt product placement."
