To say Charlie Sheen's recent past has been interesting would certainly be an understatement.

And during an appearance on the Today show this morning, the actor admitted to cohost Matt Lauer that looking back on his very public meltdown is "a little cringeable to watch because I don't recognize part of who that guy was."

The actor seems to finally be pulling it together, saying that "it was a team effort, ultimately led by myself" and that he's currently at work on his upcoming series, Anger Management.

The show, set to premiere June 28 on FX, is part of Sheen's efforts to get back into everyone's good graces.

"I guess the plan was to reintroduce myself to America and to the media and say, 'Sorry about that, but here's what's happening now.'"

When asked by Lauer if, in light of his past, he's now required to undergo regular drug testing for the show, Sheen said, "There's no testing unless something obvious happens—I show up covered in blood...somebody else's!"

As for his old series, Two and a Half Men, from which he was fired following his war of words with show creator Chuck Lorre, Sheen admitted he still has some bitter feelings.

"A little bit, but I just got to work through that," he said, adding, "I just wish they'd taken better care of the child left behind."
