Family HandoutBruce Beresford-Redman has finally broken his silence.
Just a couple of weeks after the former Survivor producer was extradited to Mexico to stand trial for the 2010 murder of his wife, Beresford-Redman proclaimed his innocence in an interview with 48 Hours Mystery.
"This is the first time I've chosen to speak…everyone seems to have decided that I killed my wife," Beresford-Redman said from his Mexican prison cell. "I didn't kill my wife…I really didn't."
Beresford-Redman was first taken into police custody back in April 2010 after the body of his then missing wife was found naked and beaten in a sewer near their Cancun resort, where the couple was vacationing with their two children.
He was later released, but remained under investigation until U.S. marshals arrested him again in November 2010.
Mexican prosecutors believe the former TV exec killed his wife by asphyxiating her in their hotel room at the resort, after the couple had an alleged violent fight.
Not only did guests occupying the room beneath them report they heard screams coming from the couple's suite, but experts also found bloodstains in several parts of the room.
But Beresford-Redman told 48 Hours he has submitted evidence to the court that will prove his innocence.
"For anyone who really believes…that you're innocent until you're proven guilty, please take a look at the evidence," Beresford-Redman said. "Or in this case, the absolute complete lack of evidence."
"This is not CSI or Law & Order or any of those shows where at the end we have a satisfying resolution," Beresford-Redman continued. "I doubt that there will ever be a satisfying resolution for this because the evidence is gone. Even if I do manage to get off, I don't know if Monica's killers will ever really be caught."
If convicted, Beresford-Redman faces 40 years to life in prison.
