Dennis Quaid's third marriage is getting a second chance.

The actor's wife, Kimberly, withdrew her petition for divorce last month after they retreated to Telluride, Colo., to talk and agreed to stay together, a source tells E! News.

So what made the parents of 4-year-old twins, Zoe and Thomas, want to give it another go?

"They have an explosive relationship but they do love each other," our source explains. "They are rethinking the divorce and seeing if they can actually make it work. It's been a difficult path for both of them, but they don't want to make a mistake and divorce.

"Ultimately, they want to try and make things work, not just for the sake of the kids, but because they both still have very strong feelings for one another."

And the couple, who married in July 2004, have certainly been through a lot.

When their twins were 8 days old, they were accidentally given a life-threatening overdose of the blood-thinner heparin at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The experience prompted the Quaids to sue the hospital and the drug maker and become advocates for patient safety.

All seemed OK until Mrs. Quaid revealed there was trouble.

The divorce papers Kimberly filed in March stated, "The marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities...that destroys the legitimate ends of the marriage relationship and prevents any reasonable expectation of reconciliation."

She did not indicate why she had changed her mind in the one-page notice of nonsuit she filed April 26 in Travis County, Texas.
