It may sound disheartening, but the remaining members of The Monkees have good reasoning behind their decision not to attend Davy Jones' private funeral in Florida.
No, it's not because of some rift or anything dramatic like that. Instead, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith just want to avoid any sort of media frenzy that might occur, and provide Jones' family with the opportunity to say their goodbyes in peace.
"My understanding is they want to avoid a media circus … the family wants to keep it very, very low-key and very, very private," Dolenz said to Billboard.
"And you can imagine as soon as one or two or any of us were to show up, it would very quickly be degraded into something that I don't think his immediate family would want to deal with. So I'm kind of respecting their wishes, whatever their wishes may be."
Jones' spokeswoman Helen Kensick confirmed to E! News that the private funeral in Florida would take place sometime this week, but would not give a specific date.
Public services—which Dolenz hopes to attend with the other Monkees men—are also slated to happen in New York and the U.K. sometime next week.
Davy Jones died at 66 from a severe heart attack.
