Amanda Brumfield, 32, the actor's eldest child, was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for the 2008 death of her goddaughter, 1-year-old Olivia Madison Garcia, who died during an overnight stay in Brumfield's home.
Brumfield had initially faced a murder charge in the death of the girl, but instead was found guilty of manslaughter in June.
When she was arrested in Florida in May 2009, Brumfield was initially charged with child neglect after telling investigators that Olivia had "fallen and hit her head." Brumfield did not call for help for more than two hours after the girl's injury, and police found inconsistencies in her story.
She claimed that the child had fallen while straddling her playpen—which stood at just 28 inches—hitting her head and biting her tongue. Prosecutors argued that it would be "impossible" for that type of fall to cause the girl's severe head injuries.
Brumfield frequently babysat Olivia, the daughter of her friend Heather Murphy, who testified in the Orange County courtroom.
"I can't believe you're gone," Murphy said, addressing her dead child. "All I want to do is take you trick-or-treating, and to dress you up as Tinkerbell...Mommy is so incomplete without you."
Brumfield herself addressed the court about the little girl, saying, "I miss Olivia just as much as anybody does."
In addition to the 20-year sentence, Brumfield was ordered to pay approximately $10,000 for investigative and prosecution costs.
Thornton reportedly has had little contact with his daughter since his 1980 split with her mother, Melissa Gatlin, the Oscar winner's first wife.
