Andrew Garfield at The Amazing Spider-Man Berlin Premiere: Man Candy or Mister Rogers?

The Amazing Spider-Man star had a hot lady on his arm and a label that should've made him look like a million bucks, but was Gucci doing Andrew Garfield any favors?!

Ever since John F. Kennedy gave his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech, the Germans have been fairly receptive to American imports.

That ended yesterday.

What could have been another shining moment for diplomatic relations—Hollywood's The Amazing Spider-Man sweethearts, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, sweeping into the city for their red carpet premiere—turned into an awkward outing when the man in question showed up in this fuddy-duddy getup...

Not that we have anything against plaid. Or Gucci.

Ryan Gosling pulled off the look when he wore Gucci's windowpane plaid suit at his Crazy, Stupid, Love premiere last year—with Emma in tow. (She may officially be the luckiest girl in the world.)

But plaid's a dated print that needs to be worn with irony to avoid looking old-fashioned. Slip it over a loose-knit gray sweater with white shirt and tie peeking out at the top, like Andrew did, and you might as well light a pipe and settle into your Barcalounger for a quiet evening at home.

Andy, the world needs to buy you as a web-slinging superhero, not Mister Rogers' stuffy grandson. Dress accordingly.
