The Amazing Spider-Man hasn't even opened yet, but already it is boldly going toward a sequel.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the screenwriting and producing team who penned J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot as well as the upcoming sequel, have signed on to write and executive produce The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures confirms.

We guess the studio's spidey senses are really tingling...

But the move is a justifiable one given the big screen Spider-Man franchise has so far grossed a combined $2.4 billion worldwide for the studio. It's expected the new installment being spun with Andrew Garfield in the role as Peter Parker/Spidey out July 3 will deliver on par with its three predecessors.

Kurtzman and Orci, both self-professed Spider-Man fans whose previous big-screen credits also include the first two Transformers movies, Mission: Impossible III, and Eagle Eye, will rewrite a first draft penned by James Vanderbilt, one of the screenwriters behind The Amazing Spider-Man. No word what the story is about as Sony is naturally keeping a tight lid on such things, including who the villain will be.

If all goes according to plan, shooting on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 should commence in early 2013 and unspool on May 2, 2014.
