Deep Sea 3-D

It's an octopus versus shrimp smackdown! Sea critters wage surf-'n'-turf wars in this underwater doc, making a splash at an IMAX theater near you. Merging the supersize film format with 3D technology, the flick provides really close encounters with exotic and colorful ocean creatures. Plus, it explores how the balance of the ecosystem relies on their complex relationships--sometimes symbiotic and sometimes predatory, reminding us that, yes, boys and girls, nature is cool but also very cruel.
Like many IMAX flicks, there's no strong narrative here, just lots of nifty stuff to gawk at. But when the photography is this gorgeous and the 3-D is this impressive, you can overlook the overly loose structure. Danny Elfman provides an appropriately awe-inspiring soundtrack, but the tone of the script and narration (voiced by Finding Neverland costars Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet) feels too geared to the elementary-school crowd. Still, Deep Sea is worth a see.
