Tom Hiddleston Won Big at the 2016 Emmys (Even Though He Didn't Actually Take Home an Award)

Taylor Swift's ex got flirty with Priyanka Chopra and avoided a run-in with John Mayer. What more could he ask for?

Tom Hiddleston didn't take home an award Sunday, but we'd say he actually had quite a winning night at the 2016 Emmys.

Even though the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie went to Courtney B. Vance for his role in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Tom got his own moment in the spotlight when he and Quantico's Priyanka Chopra presented the award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series to his director in The Night Manager, Susanne Bier.

Tom presenting with Priyanka may well have set the stage (pun intended) for their post-Emmys flirtation at the Governor's Ball. Aside from one little twirl, the twosome played it pretty straight during the show itself and stuck very closely to the script. At the after-party, however, multiple eyewitnesses told E! News Tom and Priyanka were engaging in a bit of PDA (including hand holding, "several kisses on the cheek" and a "long hug").

At the end of the night, "Priyanka and Tom said goodbye and she told him that she will see him later," a source told E! News. "They left the event about a minute after each other."

Sounds like a lovely end to a lovely evening, right? Let's rewind just a bit, though, to the ceremony itself in L.A.'s Microsoft Theater. As #Hiddleswift enthusiasts were quick to point out on social media, Tom was actually in pretty close vicinity to an ex-boyfriend of his ex, Taylor Swift! You know who we're talking about...

Emmys 2016: Instagrams & Twitpics

John Mayer, who dated T.Swift briefly in late 2009, played along with the house band Sunday at the 2016 Emmy Awards. So when Tom prepared to take the stage Sunday with Priyanka, he likely came close to the orchestra area where John and several other musicians were playing. To say Taylor's exes narrowly avoided a run-in is a stretch, but it didn't stop the Twitterverse, particularly, from panicking at the slight possibility of a Tom-John face-off.

The house band did play Tom off stage, and as several fans noted, an Emmys live shot did do a quick switch from Tom to John, but the non-event was (fortunately) just that. Tom walked away unhindered and free of any awkward encounters with dear John. That's what you call luck—or maybe just a few on-their-toes publicists making sure these gentlemen didn't inadvertently walk themselves into the same photo frame.

In any case, Tom's Emmy night was also a winning one because he wasn't plagued by any breakup blues. When People asked whether he and Taylor were still friends post-split, Tom answered with a smile, "Yes. Yes, we are."

There was no danger of the exes themselves crossing paths Sunday, either, as sources told E! News Taylor was actually in Nashville while the Emmys were going down in L.A.
