Netflix just can't kick their Narcos habit.
The streaming service announced on Tuesday that they'd renewed their drug trade crime drama, whose second season only dropped on Friday, for not only one more season, but two. "You didn't think the story died with Pablo, did you? Narcos Season 3, 2017," the company's official Twitter account tweeted, with an accompanying video that makes the official transition of power clear. No longer is this the story of Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura), who—historical spoiler alert—dies in the season two finale. As Pablo fades out and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela (Damian Alcazar), one of the Cali Cartel "godfathers" fades in, the video announces: "The blow must go on."
While the video only announces a third season, E! News can confirm that the new episode order will keep the series on the streaming service through season four.
Following the release of season two, executive producer Eric Newman previewed what a potential third season of Narcos would look like, admitting that it was time to turn our attention to the Cali Cartel. "They're certainly teed up for that, that's for sure. This show has always been about cocaine. We purposely did not call the show Pablo Escobar or Medellin," he told EW. "In the same way that Osama Bin Laden begets ISIS, Medellin begets Cali begets the Mexican Cartels. Though they existed at the same time, Cali really got the Mexicans into cocaine, which proved to be a much better business than heroin."
Of course, that didn't make saying goodbye to Moura any easier for all those involved. "We'd always intended to kill Escobar at the end of season 2, but I will be honest — I've really regretted not building it into four seasons or five seasons, and not just because Wagner is so good as Pablo Escobar. And he is brilliant," Newman admitted. "It's also because I just love the guy and I really enjoy going to work with him every day for the last two-odd years."
