Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham Commiserate Over the 2016 Met Gala

"I was like, 'This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes,'" Dunham says

Don't expect to see Amy Schumer or Lena Dunham at next year's Met Gala.

In August, Schumer told Howard Stern that the 2016 Met Gala "felt like a punishment" rather than a privilege. "It's people doing an impression of having a conversation...I don't like the farce," Vogue's July cover model explained. "We're dressed up like a bunch of f--king a--holes."

"I have no interest in fashion," the Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo author said. "I don't care." Schumer, who wore a custom Alexander Wang gown, explained that she didn't see the point in pretending she was having good time, either. "I left earlier than I should have been allowed… I got to meet Beyoncé and she was like, 'Is this your first Met Gala?' and I was like, 'It's my last!'"

In Friday's Lenny Letter, Schumer and Dunham again commiserated over the annual fashion event. "You and I were literally sitting across from each other at the Met Ball, and it was like a crazy countdown to when we could escape. You were like, 'We're honored to be here. We're honored to be here,'" Dunham recalled. Like Schumer, Dunham—a one-time Vogue cover model—went home early. "I attempted to grind my ass on Michael B. Jordan for an additional 20 minutes and then left right after you."

"I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, 'That's a marshmallow. That's a child. That's a dog.' It wasn't mean—he just seemed confused. The vibe was very much like, 'Do I want to f--k it? Is it wearing a...yep, it's wearing a tuxedo. I'm going to go back to my cell phone,'" Dunham (who wore J. Crew to the event) said of her uncomfortable interaction with the New York Giants wide receiver. "It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, 'This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.'"

The TV stars weren't the only ones who didn't enjoy the event. Demi Lovato—who, along with Nicki Minaj, was a guest of Jeremy Scott—previously posted an unflattering photo of herself walking the red carpet. "This picture pretty much summed up my first and probably last met #cool #sof--kingawkward #notforme #sweatpants #forensicfiles #whatsgood," Lovato wrote. After some fans perceived the caption as a dig at Minaj, the singer made an addendum. "p.s. some of y'all need to learn how to take a joke.. I'm obviously laughing at the fact that 1. I look incredibly awkward and 2. That the shade being thrown in this picture actually gives me life."

In 2015, Tina Fey jokingly suggested that David Letterman should "drink contact-lens fluid" as means to avoid attending fashion's biggest night. "It is such a jerk parade," the one-time Vogue cover model argued. "If you had a million arms and all the people you would punch in the whole world—they're all there."

Gwyneth Paltrow, a seven-time Vogue cover model, may have been the first to publicly voice her concerns about the annual Met Gala. "I'm never going again," the Academy Award-winning Shakespeare in Love star told USA Today in 2013. "It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all." Always a woman of her word, Paltrow hasn't been back since.
