This is one blue period that's not ending anytime soon.

Celebs love wearing bold makeup, especially of the primary color variety. This summer, Demi Lovato and Gigi Hadid were seeing red with their eye shadows, while Joan Smalls opted for a graphic-blue iteration. All ladies looked phenomenal, but—let's be honest—their beauty game is a tad unrealistic for our everyday trips to Target.

Of course, when you're tackling the blue makeup trend—even if you have the very best products—a heavy hand of hue can go oh-so wrong. Nothing against clowns, but we ain't trying to look like one today, so we tapped celeb makeup artist Rob Scheppy for one quick-but-essential tip.

"Wearing a bold shadow can be great; however, it's best to stick to making one area of your face bold and keeping the rest understated," said the pro. "Either do a bold eye or bold lip but not both."

If you're just dipping a toe into this trend pool, start with a colored eye liner instead. Your eyes will instantly pop. Ready to take a deeper dive? Find a shadow palette with a light and darker shade of blue, like Urban Decay Alice Through the Look Glass Eyeshadow Palette or Tom Ford Eye Color Duo Crushed Indigo, and blend together to create a striking smoky eye.
