It's official, y'all: Mariah Carey is guest-starring on Empire. Fox announced on Monday that the iconic songstress will finally make her long-awaited debut on the hit series' Oct. 5 episode, and, of course, she is playing a mega-star. Come on, was there any other option?
Mariah will take on the role of Kitty, a mega-superstar who comes to Empire to collaborate with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) on an explosive new song. When the duet encounters obstacles, Kitty helps Jamal dig deep to overcome personal difficulties and reach a musical breakthrough.
We're sure Jussie Smollett is thrilled he'll get to work so closely with Mariah, as he once admitted to E! News that she was his dream guest star.
"I keep saying, and I hope they can make this happen, because she's one of Lee's closest friends, I really want to see Mariah Carey on the show," he said.
Back in May, Mariah talked about possibly guest starring on the Fox hit drama during an appearance on What What Happens Live, where she revealed her friend Lee Daniels, Empire's co-creator, knew she wanted to do the show. "But I like working with Lee on movie projects because he's still a great director," she said. And she revealed there was one idea that presented to her that just wasn't the right fit. "They had this one idea and I was like, ‘Look if I'm not going to have an amazing character arc then why would we go on Empire to be basically a version of myself ?' So leave it to Lee and he'll have me in a wig they took out of a garbage can and a mustache,"she joked.
And fans of Mariah will be getting a double-dose of their favorite singer, as her eight-part event docuseries Mariah's World is set to debut on E! on Dec. 4.
In addition to Carey, other guest stars set to make an appearance during Empire's third season include Taye Diggs, French Montana, Sierra McClain and Birdman.
Empire returns on Wednesday, Sept. 21 on Fox.
