Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney's romance sparked where many Hollywood relationships are rooted—on the set—when the Grammy winner cast the blue-eyed hunk in her 2011 music video for "Yoü And I."
"I remember I went up, and we're rolling, and I kissed her and she didn't expect it," Kinney told Andy Cohen of shooting the music video. "They cut, and she slapped me. And then it was just awkward. And then the next take, I just did it again and then she didn't slap me. She didn't slap me then."
However, who could have known that the Grammy winner's casting choice had set into motion a chain of events that would lead to a heart-shaped engagement ring, a Golden Globe red carpet glide, a post-coital photoshoot, and sadly, a surprise breakup?
While they were seemingly an unlikely pair—the wildly theatrical Gaga to the traditionally handsome and low-key Kinney—no one could deny their blossoming love, especially the two themselves, who sang each other's praises at every personal and professional turn.
"I really can't imagine being with anyone other than who I'm with right now," the Golden Globe winner told Howard Stern in a December 2014 SiriusXM interview. "He is the right guy. I have that feeling. I just know it."
When Gaga made her debut on American Horror Story: Hotel, Kinney, who currently stars on Chicago Fire, was her consistent cheerleader.
"I'm proud of her and I push her. I support her 100 percent," the actor told E! News of her premiere episode in October. "I think she did great."
He was equally enamored with her voice. "He's the first man that I have dated that, when I sing onstage, he cries," the songstress told The Times. "That means more to me than anything."
The two alluded to a passionate love life when a selfie of them nakedly embracing on a paint canvas appeared on the cover of V's Spring Preview issue. "Since we first met, Taylor's been drawing and painting all over me," Gaga wrote in her editor's letter for the issue. "Years ago, when we were secretly living in San Diego and crashing on the floor of a beach shack, we never wore shoes. He told me he wanted to make love to me on a canvas."
"We made love amidst chaos. We talked about shootings. We made love amidst terrorism and we talked about how people's hearts are also suffering all over the world as they watch and witness a swell of violence," she shared with Yahoo! Style. "We made love amidst violence."
That love was enough for Gaga to accept his proposal in February 2015. "He gave me his heart on Valentine's Day, and I said YES!" she captioned a photo of her heart-shaped engagement ring on Instagram. The promise of a wedding and future children thrilled the spouses-to-be.
"We're just excited to be engaged," Gaga told E! News on the 2015 Golden Globe red carpet. As for the babies, Kinney wanted a "brood." "I'd like to have a little soccer team and a minivan and all that stuff," he said during an interview on HuffPostLive.
Currently, it doesn't seem like those dreams will come to fruition for the pair. Sources confirmed to E! News that they broke off their engagement following months of speculation after Gaga has been photographed numerous times without her unique engagement ring.
Though the reason for their split is unknown and neither party has publicly acknowledged the news as of yet, a source said, "They want to keep it private."
While it's a heartbreaking moment in the couple's history, judging by their past remarks, this was no "bad romance."
