In celebration of Independence Day, the Big Bang Theory actress shared a photo of her dogs standing on top of an American flag while wearing flag-themed handkerchiefs around their necks. While the photo was meant to play off of the holiday spirit, the Internet did not share the same sentiment. Followers quickly lambasted the actress for allowing her dogs to stand on a United States banner. "That's not a towel," one critic commented.
The star subsequently deleted the photo and ushered in a lengthy public apology late Tuesday. "I would like to comment on a photo I posted yesterday , that has caused lots of controversy. First off, please know, I have the utmost respect for my country. I am a proud American in every sense of the word. I understand the American flag stands for our freedom and represents American heroes , past and present," she began on Instagram.
"Yesterday I made a mistake by posting the picture that was taken of my sweet dogs posing on an American flag," she continued on social media. "I sincerely apologize to anyone that has been offended by my previous post. This is no way reflects my feelings toward what the American flag represents."
The actress, who has been working in Hollywood for over two decades, admitted living under a public microscope can illuminate her faults.
"Living in the public eye, can be extremely difficult at times. Every mistake and every imperfection is amplified. I am not perfect," she concluded. "I am a proud American, today, tomorrow, always."
