Are you hot in Hollywood if you haven't sung carpool karaoke?
Selena Gomez is definitely hot, as she proved when she sat shotgun in James Corden's car on The Late Late Show Monday night. The singer was the latest to sing in the late-night host's "Carpool Karaoke" series, following in the footsteps of fellow musicians Adele, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Nick Jonas, One Direction, Demi Lovato, Gwen Stefani, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder and others. The 12-minute joy ride revved up with Gomez's "Same Old Love."
Gomez thought Corden had been working too hard, so she suggested they make a pitstop. "You're kind of the boss, so why don't you just take a little detour for a second?" she said. "What do you mean?" Corden asked. "What are you talking about?" Gomez pleaded, "Just trust me."
"It'll be fine," she added. "It'll be fast."
"Fast?" Corden asked. "All right."
He had no idea just how fast. Gomez and Corden sang her hit single "Come & Get It" as they rode a roller coaster together. The host was feeling a little worse for wear after they got back in the car to sing "Hands to Myself" and take ginger shots. "Absolutely disgusting," Corden said after knocking one back. "How are you just being so cool about this?" Gomez explained, "It's killing everything inside." Corden teased, "Oh, great! What a great way to think about it!"
After singing "Kill Em With Kindness," they decided to pull in to McDonald's. "Did you know that your lyrics are on the cups?" Corden asked. Gomez had heard the rumor but hadn't seen one of the cups herself. After placing their orders (a No. 7 for her, a No. 6 for him), an employee realized she was serving a star. "Oh, my God! It's Selena Gomez! Oh, my God! I know her! I know her!" she screamed. "Oh, my God! It's Selena Gomez." Corden leaned into his guest and whispered, "James Corden is also in the car. She couldn't care less." Gomez replied, "I care!"
Their Coca-Cola cups had lyrics from "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" printed on them, but Corden insisted they get cups featuring Gomez's "Love You Like a Love Song." He asked if things like having her lyrics printed on McDonald's cups made her realize she'd "made it" in Hollywood. "When you're able to kind of be a little bit made fun of, I feel like that's when I [made it]," Gomez replied. "Oh, well then I made it at school. If that's true—if that's when you've made it—I made it when I was 13," Corden joked. "Maybe even 11."
"Now people are like, 'Hey, Selena—can't keep your hands to yourself!'" Gomez explained. Corden replied, "That was like me in school when The Goonies came out. Like, 'Hey, James, do the truffle shuffle.' The big mistake was I did it, people loved it, and then that was it every day."
After singing Gomez's "Love You Like a Love Song," Corden asked Gomez about being part of Taylor Swift's girl squad. "I'd like to consider myself an OG, like the original," the singer joked.
"Who takes the minutes at the meetings?" Corden asked.
"What are we meeting about?" Gomez asked.
"I don't know! I'm not in the squad. I've never been asked to join the squad," the host said. After Gomez offered to bring him "to a little hangout" with Swift and her group of girls, Corden confessed, "I think the squad is a bit sexist, because it's all about being equals, and yet no man has been asked to join the squad? I actually find it degrading to men." Gomez wasn't fazed by the criticism, though. "Well, I think this industry could use a bit of female sexism," she argued. "I think we have a right to be that way. It's a lot harder doing what I have to do. I think so."
"So you're saying no men in the squad ever?" Corden asked.
"Find me a boyfriend and then we'll talk about it," Gomez replied.
"Are you on the lookout for a boyfriend?" Corden asked.
"Sure!" Gomez said. "Why not?"
"Are you?" Corden prodded.
"Well, I don't know," Gomez admitted. "I like to have fun."
"So you're saying you want to get a guy in every port?" Corden teased.
"No!" Gomez laughed. "Not every!" Corden joked, "You're lining up a guy in Manchester. You're lining up a guy in New York..." but Gomez corrected him and said, "Not every place." Corden then jokingly asked, "Just once or twice a week? Is that what you mean?" To prove he doesn't hold a grudge against Swift, Corden and Gomez ended their ride by performing "Shake It Off."
