WILLIAM WEST/AFP/Getty ImagesEquality Florida, the state's largest LGBT rights group, launched a GoFundMe campaign for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting, and it raised more than $1.6 million in 22 hours. The incredibly successful campaign is the fastest one to hit $1 million in the crowd funding company's history.
So far, more than 40,000 people have donated to the cause, which says, "Funds raised on this page will be going directly to the victims and families affected by the horrific shooting at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub. Equality Florida is working with local organizations - who are also helping to raise funds - to ensure the money is distributed properly. Thank you for the support!"
The website doesn't say how exactly the funds will be distributed but ensures "we are working with a team of attorneys and experts, including the National Center for Victims of Crime, which deployed funds in both Chattanooga and Aurora, to ensure funds are distributed correctly."
The GoFundMe page also informs followers where they can donate blood, attend vigils and receive counseling.
"Every penny raised will be distributed directly to the victims and their families," the organization said in a statement.
The shooting at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, was deemed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Fifty people, including the gunman, died, and more than 20 remain in the hospital recovering from injuries.
